03.15.10 - Tee Ball, Coaches Pitch and Softball Leagues April 10-May 22
BREC, along with the Arc Baton Rouge, hosts an inclusive league that will play at BREC's Flannery Road Park, 801 Flannery Road, on Saturday mornings from April 10-May 22. This is a co-ed, non-competitive league for children and adults. League age groups are 3-5 years, 6-12 years and 13 and older. The deadline to register is April 1 and the fee is $10 per participant. There also will be a skills day on March 21 at Flannery Road Park at 2 p.m. for 3-5 year olds, at 3 p.m. for 6-12 year olds and at 4 p.m. for participants ages 13 and older In order for this program to be a success, BREC needs volunteer coaches and assistant coaches. If anyone is interested, call Brooke Stewart at 225-927-0855. As soon as coaches are determined, children will be placed on a team and parents will be notified. The goal of BREC's Inclusive Recreation leagues is to allow children and adults with and without disabilities to play on the same sports teams. BREC leagues provide recreational opportunities for players to learn basic skills and rules of the sport. The league also teaches sportsmanship in a non-competitive atmosphere and teaches participants tolerance and acceptance of those different from themselves. 03.12.10 - Baton Rouge Gallery and Historic City Park Golf Course Closed on March 13
Baton Rouge Gallery and BREC's Historic City Park Golf Course, both located at 1442 City Park Ave., will close on Saturday, March 13 due to the St. Patrick's Day parade.

03.12.10 - BREC Hosts Junior Grand Prix Tennis Tournament
BREC invites all tennis players ages 8-18 to BREC's Junior Grand Prix Tennis Tournament. The tournament takes place on March 26-28 at BREC's Independence Park Tennis Center, 7500 Independence Blvd. This tournament is divided into three separate divisions: singles ranked, singles unranked and doubles ranked. Singles ranked and unranked divisions are designed for boys and girls ages 10-18 using First Match Losers Consolation format. The doubles ranked division is intended for boys and girls ages 12-18 using a Single Elimination?- 8 Game Pro Set format. New singles unranked divisions have been added this year for children ages 8 and under using QuickStart Round Robin format on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Also, a new division for participants 10 and under has been added using FMLC format on a 60 foot court with low compression balls. USTA membership is required for registration. Deadline to register for the tournament is Sunday, March 21 at 11:59 p.m. Only online registrations are accepted. 03.12.10 - BREC's Inclusive Recreation Department Hosts Camp Sunshine May 31-July 23
With summer just around the corner, your child will seek some fun in the sun! Specifically designed for children with mental and developmental disabilities, BREC's Inclusive Recreation Department promises a good time all summer long. Camp Sunshine offers eight one-week full-day sessions from May 31-July 23. These sessions are Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended drop-off and pick-up hours available from 7-8 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. The cost per session for in-parish residents is $73 and $88 for out-of-parish residents. Camp Sunshine Comets, for children ages 6-12, will be held at Kathy Drive Recreation Center, 1801 Kathy Drive. Camp Sunshine Rockets, for teenagers ages 13-16, will be held at Independence Park Recreation Center, 7500 Independence Blvd. All BREC camps and programs are inclusive; however, BREC designed Camp Sunshine for children who must function within a 1-5 staff ratio. Activities include weekly field trips to the movies, skating rinks and the zoo. Camp Sunshine also interacts with other recreational camps to allow its participants to interrelate with their typical peers. Camp Sunshine registrants must undergo an assessment to determine the camper's best summer day camp fit. Assessments currently are available by appointment only. Children cannot be registered for Camp Sunshine without an assessment. Take advantage of spring temperatures with an entire weekend of golf! BREC hosts the Historic City Park Golf Championship on April 10-11 at BREC's Historic City Park Golf Course, 1442 City Park Ave.

03.10.10 - BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo to Celebrate Grand Opening of Realm of the Tiger
BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo announces that Realm of the Tiger, the zoo's new blockbuster Asian exhibit, is complete and a grand opening ceremony is scheduled on Saturday, April 17 at 10 a.m. at the zoo, 3601 Thomas Road.

Prepare to laugh along with the stars of Circo Comedia, as they perform acrobatic tricks, daredevil stunts, magic and juggling. Circo Comedia will perform on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 7 p.m. at BREC's Independence Park Theatre (IPT), 7800 Independence Blvd.

All ladies in and around East Baton Rouge Parish are invited show their golf skills at BRECs Ladies' Spring Classic on March 27-28. The tournament takes place at BREC's Historic City Park Golf Course, located at 1442 City Park Ave.

Before you know it, those carefree days of summer will be here again. Don't let the kids sit around bored all day. Jump start your child's imagination through recreational activities at one of BREC's many summer day camps. Registration for in-parish residents begins Saturday, March 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Out-of-parish residents can begin registering on Tuesday, April 6 from 3 p.m. to close.

Spring is now upon us, and with it comes many anticipated springtime festivities: Spring break, the arrival of the Easter bunny and the always "egg-citing" egg hunt! This spring, BREC sponsors a variety of Community Egg Hunts throughout the season at recreation centers across East Baton Rouge Parish.

On Monday, June 1, BREC, the Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge, invites the public to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for BRECs Forest Community Park, 13900 S. Harrell's Ferry Rd., located just south of Millerville Rd. and Interstate 12. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in the grassy area in the center of the park where the road splits to a one-way loop.
